Do you have family photos on your computer with names like IMG_4821? This free kit shows you how to name your first 10 photos, write down their stories, and make a backup copy. You do it one small step at a time.
Start with one small event, like a birthday or a holiday dinner.

What you will do
- Make a folder and copy 10 photos into it.
- Give each photo a clear name.
- Write down who is in each photo and what is happening.
- Make a backup copy on a separate drive.
Example: IMG_4821.jpg becomes 2024-07-20_Birthday_Ruth_01.jpg. The new name tells you the date and the event. The example photo, names, and dates are fictional.
What is in the download
The download is one ZIP file with seven files: five PDFs and two text files.
- Start Here: how to unzip the file, find your photos, and get ready.
- Visual Guide: ten pages that walk you through each step.
- Photo Story templates: a page to print and fill in by hand.
- Filename Reference: simple naming patterns to copy.
- Collection and Backup Tracker: a place to write where each copy lives.
- Photo-Stories template and example: two text files. One is blank. One is filled in so you can see how it looks.
Example: The example text file shows a finished story for a birthday photo, so you know what to type in the blank one.
What you need
- A computer with Windows 10 or 11, or a Mac.
- 10 photos saved as JPG or PNG files on that computer.
- Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac).
- A separate drive for the backup step, like an external hard drive or a USB flash drive. No drive yet? You can still do the first steps and come back to the backup later.
Example: Ten birthday photos in your Downloads folder, and a USB flash drive in a drawer. That is enough to begin.
What this kit does not cover
- Moving photos from your phone to your computer.
- Scanning printed photos.
- Changing HEIC photos into JPG files.
- Video.
- Deleting duplicate photos.
Example: If all your photos are HEIC files, this kit will not convert them. Keep your original photos safe.
Images in this kit were made with AI tools. Example people, names, and dates are fictional.
